The Pioneer

Skateboards. Soundchecks. And serious support for young people.

The Pioneer is more than just a building (which could be said is a good thing, it’s looks are somewhat lacking) – it’s a St Albans icon.

Home to the oldest indoor skatepark in the UK, and the place where Enter Shikari first cut their teeth, The Pioneer Club has always been a launchpad for youth culture, music, and movement. It’s loud, creative, and brilliantly rough around the edges – everything a proper grassroots venue should be.

These days, it’s not just bouncing back – it’s becoming something even more vital: a safe, welcoming community space for young people of all backgrounds. From after-school skate sessions to gigs that light up the stage, The Pioneer is a place where energy finds purpose.

The Pioneer Club in St Albans - an iconic venue

Jez is a trustee of the club and is regularly spotted supporting events (and occasionally pulling a shift behind the bar). He believes in showing up – whether that’s for a packed-out gig or a quiet planning meeting about the future of the space.

By day, The Pioneer transforms into a valuable hub for community organisations – a flexible venue for events, meetings and outreach work. It’s also becoming a particularly important space for neurodiverse young people, who benefit from its relaxed atmosphere, creative freedom, and supportive team.

EYES on St Albans backs The Pioneer because it represents everything we believe in – community, independence, creativity and giving people a place to belong.

It’s more than a venue – it’s a launchpad, a safe space, and a little bit of glorious chaos.
